The Square is a newly opened eatery and bar which claims to be all about Seafood, Steaks & Barbecues, located in the centre of St Helier on the old Southampton Hotel site which was demolished a few years back and rebuilt to house office and retail space, such as The Square which is on the ground floor managed by Jersey’s Liberation Group. Never one’s to miss out on new food options in Jersey C and I decided to pay a visit on its opening weekend for lunch.
Upon entering the new space it’s clear to see that much thought and effort has gone into the decor, the group itself describes the space as a ‘relaxed urban, industrial feel’ and they have certainly achieved this. There are some neat finishing touches to walls with some typography signs, the bar top has a copper finish which adds a nice glow and the whole place reminds me of Bubby’s High Line in New York. However, I have to admit there are certain aspects and corners that feel a little confused, perhaps too much thought has gone into trying to make the space unique.
We picked our spot and sat down, the service we received from the staff was attentive although it’s worth mentioning we had 4 different servers which wasn’t ideal. After looking through the menu which is ambitious, to say the least, and features a Côte de Boeuf for £60… we settled on the Cuban and Reuben sandwich.
The plates arrived packed and our sandwiches stuffed, I and C both decided to share a half of each other’s sandwich. I found the Reuben a little underwhelming taste wise but the Cuban much more flavoursome, both sandwiches almost looked identical and were presented with sides of chips, dill slaw, and gherkins. Unfortunately, C wasn’t a fan of either sandwich and found the grilled sourdough bread far too greasy, I didn’t mind as much but I would have preferred thinner cut slices.
I would like to visit again and C could be convinced, but I would be interested in trying something from the seafood & barbeque options as this seems to be what The Square specialises in. As a potential drinking spot, this remains to be seen, it would be good to visit on a weekend with friends and see what the atmosphere turns into, it’s good to see something new in the heart of town and only time will tell if it continues to be a success or not.
